When I was flying to San Diego last week for the Individual World Poetry Slam, I had no idea what to expect. It was going to be my first competitive slam and my first performance off the Kenyon College campus. It got me thinking about what got me writing in the first place.

The San Francisco Giants came off their atrocious 2017 season looking to contend. Many around the league were skeptical and most baseball pundits panned the Giants for giving up prospect assets to acquire veterans like Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen. Then many thought all hope was lost after a line drive broke franchise cornerstone Madison Bumgarner's throwing hand. The Bumgarner injury was the first of many blows, the team's two best remaining starters (Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzjia), their closer Hunter Strickland, their starting second baseman (Joe Panik), Longoria, and starting first baseman (Brandon Belt) have all missed time due to injuries. Yet, the Giants have rolled with the punches. When Bumgarner finally returned the Giants were still a .500 team and weren't far behind in what has been a crowded NL West race.
This year's NBA Draft was setup to be one of the most active in history. There were a number of prospects at the top of the draft and teams like Atlanta and Memphis who wanted to move down, the Clippers had two top 14 picks, Kawhi Leonard had asked for a trade, and the Celtics still have their hoard of picks next year. But, then the draft went rather quietly with only two major trades in the top 15. The strength of this draft class was depth and it made teams weary to give up valuable assets or take on bad contracts when they could still get a prospect they liked where they were. Here's my thoughts on every pick and trade:
On Thursday night the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers squared off for the fourth consecutive year in the NBA Finals. What ensued was the best Game 1 in NBA Finals history. It wasn't just a game filled with drama, it was filled with a series worth of storylines. The Cavs entered game 1 the greatest underdogs (according to Vegas) in 16 years and no pundits gave them much of a chance to win the series, let alone Game 1 in Oakland.
I've really put off discussing what I was feeling leading up to yesterday. I just finished up my sophomore year at Kenyon College and so I still have a couple years left to take in what college has to offer. But, the end of this school year meant that some of my best friends and the best people I've ever met are moving onto the next part of their lives. I'm extremely happy and excited for all they are going to do, it's just tough not to join them. Without many of them, my college experience would be lacking many of the things I value the most today.
The San Francisco Giants were one of the most enigmatic teams throughout the off-season. Coming off one of the most disappointing seasons in league history, many saw it as a sign it was time for the Giants to throw in the towel and rebuild. Instead, General Manager Bobby Evans brought in upgrades at every position of need and made it clear the Giants had plans to contend in the NL West.
This has already been one of the most active off-seasons in NFL history at the quarterback position with five primary starters from this past season already changing teams (Alex Smith, DeShone Kizer, Case Keenum, Tyrod Taylor, and Kirk Cousins). Now we are less than 48 hours away from the start of the 2018 NFL Draft and many analysts say this year's class of QBs is one of the best in years. Many pundits have graded four quarterbacks worthy of top 10 picks, there are potentially six that will go in the first round. Hidden behind the quarterbacks, however, is a very deep draft class, this is how I see the chips falling:

About MeI have been a die-hard fan of the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Golden State Warriors my entire life. Following them (and the surrounding leagues) have given me a lot of strong opinions on sports. Links to some of Marc's Articles around the Web:
